This garden is a wonderful example of renaissance beautiful in Florence.Covering about 45,000 squ. metres it contains numerous gardens of various designs, many statues, fountains and grottos, an amphitheatre and an obelisk and a great view of Florence.

Botanical Gardens

Owned by the Università degli studi di Firenze.
Also known as the Giardino dei Semplici, it has been a centre of botanical study and research since the 1700's. On display are plants of various species from all over the world. In the Spring there is a splendid display of colour with the azaleas in bloom along the main avenue.

Le Cascine

The gardens extend for 3 kilometres along the shores of the River Arno and is great for the daily jog or simply strolling in the shade of hundreds of trees. There is a market held here every Tuesday morning from 8am until lunchtime.

The Garden at Villa della Petraia

Of particular interest in this 16 th century villa is the lovely entrance hall covered with a glass skylight once serving as a stylish ballroom. It also houses many 17 th century frescoes. In the Italian-style garden is the famous fountain of 'Fiorenze emerging from the water' sculptured by Giombologna. There is also a delightful English park with groves of oak, pine and cedar.

The Garden al Villa di Castello

Occupying nearly 160 hectares, this beautiful 16th century garden is offers delightful water features, fountains, statues, ponds and greenery. The garden was largely transformed in the 1800's when Ferdinando 111 of Lorena remodelled it as an English garden. One can still enjoy some of its original splendour, like the huge sculpture of the 'Colosso dell'Appennino'.
