The entire Versilia could be considered none other than a big piece of a black forest cake where in the taste is in the entire being with surprises of cherries in between to make it more wanted. We would try to have some cherries from our piece of cake and to start what could be more appropriate than the Viareggio.
Better known as Tuscan Riviera, Viareggio is located on the Tuscan coast well connected with train service to Pisa, Livorno and La Spezia. The city is like any other modern day city with all the facilities available including a tourist centre and facilities for road commutation. Viareggio comprises of several district which includes the commercial ports, central shopping area and several other tourists attractions including the area of Torre del Lago located in south. To the north is the location of the famous resort of Lido di Camaiore. The commercial port is also an attraction point for it anchors the small and large luxury yachts the cruise of which are none other than dream catcher in one’s life. Move towards the north of the port and you are in the main tourist beach the whole length of which is covered by private establishment providing beach accessories like umbrellas and deckchairs. Not to forget are some brilliant signatures of the past centuries in the form of restaurant, cafes and bars. Lets now move towards south and towards the Viale Tigli. Remarkably having no bus service along the road this is perhaps one of the main connecting routes to Torre del Lago. The reason for moving along this road is to find serenity and peace as towards west of the road lies the pine forest and the white sand beach where birds and air only can have the audacity to interfere and disturb one’s privacy.
After enjoying and relaxing by the beach let’s talk about something material in nature – the apuan marbles. Humour apart but the place of its shipping is one which is of prime interest for the international travelers as one of the best tourist resort. Welcome to Forte dei Marmi, a seaside resort set up in the sixteenth century to ship the apuan marbles, now a famous destination of diplomats, businessman and VIPs across the globe for their villas and houses. The place is recognized and developed as a holiday spot and a dream destination only in the last century attracts tourist by its enchanting charm and beauty of the nature in the form of gardens, luxuriant meadows and kitchen gardens by the side of the villas. Theirs a typical and rare balance of human intervention and nature as one can very well witness the historical and cultural architectural evidences along with the numerous valleys of Apuan alps to be spelled by the beauty. And off course adventure sports does exist in this nature’s paradise. Call it anything starting from mountaineering, sailing, free climbing or surfing arrangements are there to experience the best of it. The Lake Massaciuccoli and the sea always welcome the brave and adventurous. The beauty of marble lies in the territory between Cinquale and Pietrasanta of which we will talk about later. The glory of the area is highlighted by Michelangelo by making use of the marbles for his creations. The path traced from the Apuane Alps to the sea. If you are still wandering of how to pass your remaining hours and day the city has lots of fairs to offer throughout the year and still more are the visits to the antique shops in Dante public square which will take care of the bit of the spare free time that you would have.
If we are not tired with the rendezvous of beauty and art lets move to the Pietrasanta for we can experience the perfect match and harmony of human and nature in this wonderful ancient city. Much known to the world for its marble quarries the city is also famous for its artistry in marble craftsmanship and bronze foundaries. The city gives wonders in civil, military and religious architecture. In the religious art the Pisano influence is quite prominent. The legacy of the city is marked by legends like Michelangelo, the poet Giosue Carducci and the scientist Lucchese Matteucci. Others to mention who played the role of giving the artistic patrimony to the city would be the famous Stagio Stagi, Bonucccio Pardini, Matteo Rosselli, Francisco Coradi and Iacopo Vignali. Thus the city becomes a place for a complete cultural feast to be relished with the nice inhabitant of the city. It would be absolute unfair to complete the tour without having a glimpse of the marble quarries which traces its evidence much before the renaissance days. Those were the days when quarrying was a much complicated but interesting event wherein wooden pegs were inserted in the natural cracks and then allowed to swell by pouring water in it. The same event has taken a much technical twist in the modern era with the help of cable, diamonds and high speed motors. The modern day Michelangelos use pneumatic chisel instead of hand chisel and hammer. The city is a perfect traditional cocktail with the perfect blend of art, culture, history and natural beauty served on a glass of rich heritage with a dash of technology added to it. The tour although hectic cannot be called as tiring as tiredness is more a state of mind and it cannot occupy the space preoccupied by the nostalgia of the beauty and creativity of this wonderful piece of Versilia. |
