Perini Navi

Fabio Perini, the superyacht builder from Italy based in Viareggio, came from a family in which many worked in the paper industry. He followed the foot steps of his forefathers. But, being the creative boy that he was, he invented an automated felt tensioning system for paper machinery at the young age of 17. He joined the yachting industry later and implemented similar technology there. Soon he specialized in building vessels which could be termed as ‘mega’ in size and surprisingly, could be controlled by a very small crew. This he achieved using the deadly combination of a sharp acumen and absolute technical skills. It is worth mentioning that he still heads his paper machine manufacturing firm, “Faper group”, which is quite popular worldwide.

Design, style, and integration of both are the hallmarks of all Perini Navi creations. He has, since starting off, introduced at least seven elements to ship building- Contemporary styling, Sail automation, Comfort, Generous space on deck, a swinging keel for better stability, quality and most importantly, safety. He trusts his gut feeling and is an instinctive creator. This coupled with his experience and technical skills, enable him to design awesome machines.

Perini Navi, the name under which his sailboats are built, has it’s headquarters in Viareggio in Italy. It also has building facilities in Tuzla, Turkey, Rhode Island, The USA, and La Spezia. From the early 1980s the company has built 22 yachts some of which are available for charter. His boats include the “Marisa” or the “Principessa Vai Via”, the 50m ketch “Aurora”, the “Independence”, and the “Squall”-his first custom sailboat. This year he is on course to finishing the world’s largest sailboat-“The Maltese Falcon.”

His sailboats are usually anywhere between 80 and 210 feet in length and are characterized by acute weight-control mechanisms to enhance speed. Masts for all his boats are built in-house. As the sails are subjected to high stresses of automatic hoisting and lowering down they are rigidly tested before being accepted. Another important criterion for the sails is that they should retain, as much as possible, their original shape, and not deform despite the magnitude of stresses. This is to ensure near maximum power and hence efficiency. All these make choosing a suitable material for the sails a cumbersome process. There have also been cases where the sails have been coated with special material to block UV material to enhance the life of the sails. The longevity of his vessels has almost been standardized as “heavy usage for four years” or 25000 miles at sea. The company’s constant search of perfection has led to many major innovations in the industry like the invention of new material for sails and various weight reduction techniques. In 1983, he built the “Felicita”, which pioneered the idea that a big sail boat could be sailed alone. Since then the co ordination between the flybridge and the sail control became an indispensable part in operational safety of large sailboats. Advanced technology like computer simulation of sail loads and further optimization are a requisite to fashion these high performance clippers.

Fabio Perini won the prestigious Superyacht society’s Leadership Award in 2004. The awards ceremony were held at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October, 2004. This confirmed Fabio Perini’s status as the most revered figure in the industry, more so since the votes were cast by one’s own peers in the industry.

 Perini Navi Boats

“Squall” was one of the boats built at Viareggio, in 2002. It was designed by architect Ed Dubois. The Aluminum boat could hold ten passengers and was 172 feet long. It was made of carbon fiber masts and had a one-level superstructure. The ketch (two-masted sailing vessel) was light-weight and was, understandably, designed for speed. There was, however, a problem with the vessel. It’s draft was more than 6 feet and this would have made it’s hull scrape the bottom of the canal near the boatyard in Viareggio. This problem was solved by attaching 26 heavy duty balloons to the ship, lifting it jus enough to clear the sea bed.

The 50 meter long “Aurora” was built in 2000 and can be manned by just 9 men. This boat characterizes style like no other and is a Perini Navi classic. Wood is predominant in this boat and in fact the entire paneling is done with cherry wood. There are many options for recreation for people on board-scuba diving, wake boarding, water skiing to name a few. With salons and state-of-the-art audio-visual systems, this boat is a dream come true…on seas.

“Burrasca”, was launched in the year 2003 and built in Italy itself. Perini Navi plans to build a series of 56m sailboats in collaboration with Ron Holland and this was the first of them.

The 290-foot long “Maltese Falcon”, when finished in 2005, will be the world’s largest personal sailboat. It is currently being built in Istanbul. Despite its sheer bulk, this boat aims to be a speed machine. In fact the owner, who insists of maintaining anonymity, believes that it will be as fast as any boat in history and hence has plans of challenging long standing world speed records with this new high tech toy of his. “Gerard Dijkstra & Partners” take care of this vessel’s architecture while the British firm “Ken Freivokh Design” design the interior design. The four decked interior will be designed by the German firm “Sinnex”. The three masts will be made of carbon fiber and the vessel will have an automatic rigging system to raise and lower the bulky sails(approximately 2400 square meters).

The 118’ cruising yacht “Gitana” was the first yacht to be built by the Italian Perini Navi boatyard. And the boat won the “Sailmaker’s Trophy” in 2002.

“Liberty”- The luxury sailing ship has a crew of just 12. The lower deck runs across the entire length of the ship and has a laundry room and the engine room. The deck has a circular saloon and this ‘sky lounge’ allows more privacy to guests. Liberty has a top speed of 14 knots powered by a twin-cylinder, 1250 hp, V12 diesel engine.

 The Perini Navi Cup

The Perini Navi Cup aims to be an annual event and the inaugural edition was held from July 8-11, 2004 in the Porto Rotonda yacht club off the coast of Sardinia island. This was held exclusively for Perini sailboats of length 36 to 56 meters and the boats that participated included the dazzling 56m Santa Maria. The regatta, a concept that was thought of to celebrate 20 long years of super yacht building, attracted huge international following that is expected to continue every year.

 The Final Word

On the market front, Perini Navi’s market share hit a massive 63% in the mega sailing yacht category in 2002. This is a formidable achievement considering the fact that there are a lot more stalwarts out there in the industry constantly trying to out-innovate competition. Perini manages not to rest on his laurels and is perennially on the lookout for new ideas. This streak in him pushed him to build relations with local craftsmen and start building operations in Turkey and also have a sales operation in North America. He also imports ideas from great creators in the industry. With such a strong and proactive leader at the helm, it cannot be gainsaid that Perini Navi will continue to lead the sailboat industry for a long long time to come.
