Their origins are subject to speculation with Herodotus claiming that they had come from Lydia (west Turkey) and Dionysius believing that they were indigenous to Italy itself and called themselves Rasenna. Some non-Greek inscriptions were found in the island of Lemnos and these appeared to be related to the Etruscan language dating back to 6th century BC and this seemed to support Herodotus.
