Wine Tasting, a Visit to a Cheese Factory & Siena

Your driver will collect you from your hotel and your adventure will start with a trip upone of the most famous 'viale' in Florence. From here you will enjoy the morning over the cty skyline. You will then continue on and enjoy the rolling fields, vineyards olive grove . A quick stop off at one of the few remaining fortified towns for a coffee and you will be on your way to the fattoria.

Signora Vittoria will great you and the journey starts with a tripto the stallsto see how an Italian farm is run, you will see how the animals and raised and the technology used at the farm. The milk from the sheep is used to make 'pecorino' and 'ricotta' cheeses. There are many different types of pecorino cheese, from that matured in caves, made with pepper, tartufo ( truffles) or even chilli. This cheese can also be wrapped in vine leaves or matured with wood shavings to give them their unique flavour. This is at time honored product that is included in many tuscan dishes and you will have the chance to try it with the farm-made wines, honey, fruit mustards, home baked bread and a typical salami made from the 'cinta senese' pig. This animal is a cross between the wildboar and the domestic pig. This breed is common in the Siena area and is easily recognised by the white ring they have around their middle. The farm also produces different vegetables that are seasoned under herbs and extra virgin olive oil.

After your typical tuscan lunch you will head off to enjoy an afternoon in Siena,which is a city that is still considered the prime rival of Florence after many centuries of war during the Middle Ages. The final losing battle took place in 1555 when Siena was said to have lost about 60% of its population. The architecture here is typically Gothic in style and is recognised by the reddish-brown brick, the colour known to artists as 'burnt siena'. You will have the afternoon free to enjoy the magnificent 'Piazza del campo' which is one of Italy's most beautiful squares and the host to the long honored tradition of the 'Palio'. This exciting and controversial horse race is where the rival 'contradas' of the city ( the different neighbourhoods) train their prize horses and jockeys to then race around and around the circular square and death defying speeds, forgetting what 'fair play' is and just pushing their horses to reach the finish line first.

Wandering through the thin alleyways in this glorious city you will find wonderful restaurants and enotecas and great fashion stores .You must try the typical 'ricciarelli' (almond biscuits),'panforte'which is a sweet made with fruit & nuts and 'cavallucci' ,a dried bread buns spiced with aniseed.

The 'Duomo'of Siena is a spectacular sight and there are also many museums here to enjoy including the 'Pinacoteca Nazionale' which holds one of Italy's foremost and most wonderful art collections, with over 1500 pieces. If you are feeling energetic you can attempt the climb up the 289 foot high 'Torre di Mangia',the second highest tower in al of Italy. The view from the top is breathtaking.. as are all of the steps!

Around 5pm you will meet your driver and head back into Florence.
