History of Villa Lunetta:

Villa Lunettas foundations date back to 1200. The original use of the palace was a hunting residence for the elite Florentine Gentiles. The origins of the Lunettas was near Ponte A Signa and from ancient times they owned this villa and the other villa called on the Arno known as La Torre (the tower) that even today conserves the aspects of a 1300s walled castle.

Agnolo di Filippo, a great friend of Cosimo de Medici and admired by Leon Battista Alberti, retired tired and old in the villa of Ponte A Signa and lived there for 12 years, when he wrote the brilliant dialogues of the governing of the family and died at the age of 86 in 1446.

In 1434 the wealthy nephew of the former, Battista di Pandolfini returned in patria from Naples and gave the initial magnificent architecture to his villa at Ponte A Signa, honoured by the king of France Carlo VIII on the 13th of November 1495. The villa has been engraved with the date 1488, which is believed to be the date of the full restoration of this antique palace. The linear and harmonious architecture, the beautiful loggia, richly carved windows, the perfect sculpture of the stonework, reflects the work of the famous Bendedetto da Rovezzano. King Carlo VIII of France visited the castle as a child. Since the 14th century nothing was changed or hardly confirmed by Giuseppe Zocchi.

At the beginning of the 18th century the Lunettas sold their antique villa to the family Samminiatelli that immediately resold the villa to the De Prats exiled from France after the revolution.

In one of the living rooms, like the others, the 1800s style frescoes ornate the room. Hung on one of the walls is a large oil painting of the Marchis Francesco De Prat in his white and red uniform, narrating to his son the episode of July 14,1790, while serving as naval commander and his meeting with the king Luigi XIV; also present is his wife dressed in satin who seated watches over us. Today all three rest in the chapel constructed by Filippo Pandolfini. Other guests to this villa included Napoleon Bonaparte.

Memories of The Villa Lunetta:
Staying here is like staying with family, in this case the family is of two generations. Whatever our needs [as it turned out we had many of them] the family was there to assist us. The villa itself is in a castle built in the 14th century and is both spacious and beautiful inside and outside. My wife is a gourmet cook and enjoyed taking a cooking class which prepared dinner for the evening meal which I attended. The food was delicious and the entire evening wonderful. We even went on a wine tasting tour with the class the next day to Siena. The location was perfect, only minutes by car to the train station [Florence 15 minutes], the Autostrada`s closeby. A big bonus were the many fine restaurants nearby by car that equalled the finest in Italy. Our two weeks at the Villa went quickly and we were sorry to leave even though we were off to the Amalfi coast . Tips: Be sure to have a cell phone that works in Italy before you get there; if driving, use the credit card payment booths to avoid long lines; use the train to Florence to avoid the parking problem; don`t rely on a navigation system, they don`t work well in Italy as I unfortunately found out; don`t rent an automatic car, I turned mine in for a shift; have good maps. All in all, you will be in "good hands"at this property!

To all the Travel Tuscany staff,
I`m happy to write about our stay at the Villa Lunetta from April 21-28. The general comment is that we were delighted with the whole experience. Our apartment was spacious, spotlessly clean, comfortable, and just right for us. The pictures we saw in advance did not mislead us about anything!! All our dealings with your office were easy and efficient. The meal cooked by the chef was fabulous!! The owner was kind and helpful and delightful. She directed us to her grocer, the market, and any other services we needed.
We have recommended traveltuscany to many friends, and we will eagerly contact you again if we have the chance to return to Italy. It has been a pleasure -- keep up the good work.

Thank you for helping us find the most beautiful villa in Florence. Villa Lunetta is half of the bottom floor if a huge 13th century villa which used to be a hunting lodge for the nobles of Florence. The villa owner is on site and she is warm, welcoming and very flexible. The setting is beautiful with olive trees and grape vines - it is a working villa and we loved that aspect of it. It is within easy walking or driving distance to the train station which is a quick 20-minute ride to Florence. The perfect home-base for travels all around the region.
Thanks, again. We`ll come back to Italy someday and we`ll think of you first when we do.

Hello Elizabeth- just returned from a trip and saw your e-mail. I will be happy to respond. Our time at Villa Lunetta was wonderful. It was a great location for us to see Florence and travel to some of the Tuscan villages, which we did. The Villa was beautiful- even enjoyed a day relaxing by the pool. We are very glad we had a rental car as walking every to the train station might not have been as practical, but it could have been done.
You were absolutely wonderful when you came to the Villa with your doctor. Getting sick at that time was not what I planned and you made it possible for me to get a doctor's care and feel better very quickly. Thank you so much!!! I will never forget what you did. Not feeling well in a foreign country is a rather daunting experience and I appreciate your help so much. We would love to come back someday and just stay in a villa and see more of Tuscany. My illness kept us from seeing everything we would have liked, although luckily we saw all of Florence which was wonderful and so beautiful.
