Originally the main tower was constructed as a granary, where local farmers stored their harvest, with Sienese sentries protecting it from attacking Florentines. In the 16th century, the property was converted to a country estate. The family owning ‘Castello Caldana’ held close ties to Rome, having furnished the Vatican with a number of popes. Thus the family also commissioned the beautiful, nearby private chapel, which is still in use today. The estate originally had extensive vineyards. Enormous "barriques", reminders of these vineyards, can still to be found in the basement of the larger tower. Today the owners are re-planting the vast vineyards to match the magnitude of years gone-by. ‘Castello Caldana Cottage’ sits deep within a winding country road, in the unspoiled countryside just west of Siena. Fields of sunflower, grape, wheat and olive surround the area. A sand road winding through the estate's fields, through the olive orchards, the riding ring and vineyards leads to the cottage. The formal garden at the front of the castle is currently being re-planted in the style of a medieval garden. The west entrance gate leads to the cottage and is seperate from the owner’s. Through the gate, guests find a large swimming pool, terrace, pergola and garden. Over the past twenty years, ‘Castello Caldana Cottage’ has been lovingly restored with the decor carefully selected to equal the style of the buildings themselves. The cottage sleeps two persons and it has exposed-beam ceilings, brick arches, parquet floors and antique Tuscan furniture. The kitchen opens onto a large terrace housing potted citrus trees and teak furniture. This splendid kitchen has all modern appliances, hand made tiles, marble countertop, hand-made wooden cabinets and fine ceramics and glassware. The living and dining area offers hand-made sofa and easy chairs, decorated in Italian fabrics. CD player, CDs, satellite television, coffee-table books about the region and a wood burning stove can also be found. The bedroom has a double bed and antique furniture and opens onto the terrace and garden area. Fine linens are provided for the beautifully-tiled bathroom with shower. ‘Castello Caldana’ estate produces wine, oil, cheese, honey, jam and garden vegetables. All may be purchased for tasty Italian dinners throughout your stay. An English-language newspaper is delivered daily. Occasionally, dinners are organized in the courtyard of the castle for the guests.
